When I first thought about travelling, I automatically assumed I would have to immediately go to all the outdoor stores and purchase sporks, ugly walking jackets and waterproof trousers. However, now having adventured, I've realised wearing an outfit suitable for Bear Gryll’s isn’t exactly necessary or particularly fashionable when taking a good Instagram photograph. There are a few items that I’ve bought that I think are essential for travelling in fashion. I take these on all my travels and use them in everyday life too. Here are my top 10 trendy travel trends that I recommend for venturing in style.
1. Bum-bag
The bum-bag I wear is the ‘Doggy Bag Midnight’ from Eastpak and I wear it with everything for every occasion. Its great for a day stroll seeing the sights as its lightweight and easy to wear around your waist of your over your shoulder. It fits my phone, camera, sunglasses case keys etc. You can keep your smaller items like your purse in the inside zipper pocket knowing it's safe and secure. I wear this on nights outs, day trips, hikes, its just wonderful for a minimalist lifestyle!
2. A Good Pair of Sunglasses
I really recommend buying a good pair of sunglasses. I used to buy cheap high-street store sunglasses which were great for fashion, however, did a poor job at protecting my eyes. I was eyeing up some vintage cat-eye shape ray bans for ages and finally decided to splash out the cash and just buy them. Yes, they’re a little expensive but I will wear these for life and they protect my eyes perfectly from the sun. My ray bans are in the style ‘Nina’ and they go with everything and I just love them.
3. Polaroid Camera
I actually bought this as a birthday gift for my boyfriend so we could take it on our travels and use the photos in a scrapbook for memories. We take the camera on all our trips and it fits perfectly in my bum-bag. Yes, they are a little pricey, but the film is only €15.99 which works out €0.79 a photo, which isn't terrible if you're already, for example, spending €50.00 on a trip. I love how cool it looks and the polaroid style is stylish and captures the moment.
4. Oversized Checked Shirt
I believe an oversized check shirt never goes out of fashion and is just a staple piece to have in your travel wardrobe. They’re really lightweight so easy to pack in your bag for when your body needs a bit of protection from the sun or you need a little layer in the evening. They go with cycle shorts, skirts, can be worn as a shirt dress and yeh, I love mine; they’re so comfy. My favourite shirt is one I bought from Humana in Malasana for 1€ and the colours are trendy for all the seasons.
5. Slides
This probably doesn’t appeal to everybody, but my slides are the best €19,95 I’ve ever spent in my life. I wear them as house slippers because they’re ridiculously comfy and easy to slip on and off. They’re great for wearing to the pool or lake because they’re waterproof and because they have a platform they give me some height - hooray. Mine is the Adelette Aqua Flip Flop and goes with everything because they’re black and white.
6. Headscarf
I have a variety of headscarf’s that I’ve collected over the years and theirs so many ways to wear them that require minimal effort. They’re perfect for when you're in a rush, feeling lazy or have a busy day exploring. I wear my head-scarfs for all occasions because they just add extra pizzaz to an outfit and keep my long and sometimes greasy hair out of my face.
7. Backpack
A good-sized backpack with compartments is amazing for a weekend trip. I use mine as a personal bag to put under the seat in front of me on the plane. This means I don’t have to pay extra for a cabin bag which is great. I’m so done with heavy shoulder bags because I start to ache on one side; a backpack solves this problem. I bought my current backpack dirt cheap from an independent store in La Latina, Madrid but I believe its a dupe of the ‘Clas Seoul’ Kipling backpack.
8. A Good Pair or Trainers
I really think nowadays trainers can be worn for all sorts of occasions. You can wear them to the gym, for a run, hike, day shopping and even on a night out. I just think they’re an item everyone should own; they’re versatile, comfy and you can find so many to suit your style. Mine is the Nike Black Air Max Thea Trainers and are in black and white and just go with everything. I wear them to the gym as well as style them with black skinny jeans when I want to feel comfy.
9. Good Quality Socks
There is nothing worse than having a long day of sightseeing and have your socks fall which results in blisters. I recommend investing in some good quality socks that last and have good elastic fulfilling the purpose of the socks of staying on your ankle. I have the ‘Nike Everyday Cushioned Socks’ which look cool with chunky trainers. They wash well, are super comfy and save money in the long run because they haven’t got holes in the 2 years I’ve had them.
10. Comfy Knickers!
Okay, so yes this sounds ridiculous, but boy does a nice pair of comfy undies make your feel good. I’m sorry but an itchy bad quality lace just isn’t for me. I have pretty sensitive skin, so walking all day in cheap knickers kills my mood. I have to admit, I enjoy Victoria panties and I just buy them when they’re on offer to save money. The quality is also so much better which makes them look so much more new no matter how many times you’ve worn them.
